Arsenal begin their participation in the group stage of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League with a tough tie against European champions Lyon at the Groupama Stadium this evening.
The French club regained their European crown with a 3-1 victory over previous champions FC Barcelona in last season’s final. Lyon are now eight-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winners following their latest success.
Lyon go into tonight’s tie without a whole host of top players. Former Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Ada Hegerberg is out while Lyon remain without the likes of Amel Majri, Sara Däbritz, Dzsenifer Marozsán, Ellie Carpenter and Catarina Macario.
Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall confirmed in his pre-match press conference that The Gunners have no fresh injury concerns. The biggest headache for the Arsenal boss is the ongoing shortage of options at centre-back. England’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2022-winning captain Leah Williamson is out, as is Brazilian captain Rafaelle Souza. Both players have been sidelined for several weeks. Steph Catley and Lotte Wubben-Moy have helped to fill the void and that could again be the case this evening.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage match between Lyon and Arsenal kicks-off at 8pm. The game is available for fans to stream live on DAZN.
