Chelsea get UWCL campaign underway with gritty victory over PSG

Chelsea have got their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade Jean-Bouin this evening.

The Blues took the game to the hosts and established a first half lead thanks to a Millie Bright volley. Paris Saint-Germain were better in the second half but Chelsea survived the increased pressure to secure the win.

After a scrappy start, Sam Kerr had a excellent opportunity to break the deadlock for the visitors but her effort was blocked by Paris Saint-Germain keeper Sarah Bouhaddi.

The opening goal arrived just before the half-hour and it was Chelsea who got it. The hosts struggled to clear the danger following a corner kick and Erin Cuthbert’s cross found Bright who volleyed the ball home at the back post.

Kerr attempted to cheekily net a second goal for The Blues in the lead up to half-time but her lob failed to significantly trouble Paris Saint-Germain keeper Bouhaddi.

Quality chances were again few and far between in the second half. Kerr was inches away from making it 2-0 just before the hour but her shot deflected wide off Elisa de Almeida before Kadidiatou Diani finally tested Ann-Katrin Berger at the other end. Diani and Kerr both saw further efforts go wide of target later in the half.

In the closing stages, Paris Saint-Germain seemed to be the side more likely to grab a goal but Chelsea held out for an excellent away victory on Matchday 1.

Chelsea return to Kingsmeadow on Matchday 2 as they host Vllaznia while Paris Saint-Germain travel to Spain to face Real Madrid.
