Sunderland defender Faye Mullen has undergone surgery on her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and she will now undergo a period of rehabilitation.
The Lady Black Cats provided an update on the player’s injury this lunchtime via a post on their official club Twitter account.
Mullen sustained her injury during Sunderland’s FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup group stage match against Liverpool at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground in early October. The player suffered her injury in the 39th minute of the match and was replaced by forward Nicki Gears. Mullen’s injury was assessed by the Sunderland medical staff who determined that she had ruptured her ACL.
Mullen has now gone under the surgeon’s knife in a bid to address the injury and the defender will spend the remainder of the 2022/2023 campaign in rehabilitation.
Last season saw Mullen play an important role for Sunderland with the player having made 15 appearances for the club in the Barclays Women’s Championship. The player struggled for playing opportunities early this season and she will be bitterly disappointed that her cruel injury has taken away the opportunity for her to battle for her place in the team.
Sunderland continue the season at Coventry United on Sunday afternoon.
