Building defensive stability on the agenda for new Brighton & Hove Albion boss Scheuer

Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Jens Scheuer has highlighted the club’s poor defensive record as the first thing to address in his new job.

The Seagulls currently have the worst defensive record in the Barclays Women’s Super League after conceding 29 goals in just eight league matches.

The poor defensive record is arguably the biggest contributing factor to Brighton & Hove Albion’s current position of 11th in the Barclays Women’s Super League table and new boss Scheuer knows that his side must quickly become more resolute at the back.

“For me and the team, it is necessary to stabilise the defence because we have conceded a lot of goals so this is the first thing we have to change,” Scheuer said in his first interview with MyAlbion TV.

“It is not only about the defence, I don’t want to just blame the defenders, the whole team need to work hard on the game starting with the strikers and ending with the goalkeeper.

“First, we need to stabilise and then we need to improve the offensive side of the game step-by-step.

“We also want to implement our style of play. We want the fans to be proud of us and to be excited to see us play on game day and see our fight on the pitch for three points. This is our goal and my wish that supporters give us their backing and we can respond with emotion and three points.”

Despite Brighton & Hove Albion’s struggles this season, Scheuer sees great potential in the squad. He believes that the players will be hungry for success when the season resumes next month.

“I’ve read a lot of reports about the team and have watched a lot of games and I know that they are talented, there is lots of talent in the squad.

“We know that we are not the biggest club with the most money but we will be the team with the hungriest girls on the pitch.”

Scheuer will oversee his first Brighton & Hove Albion fixture when the Sussex club travel to The King Power Stadium to face Leicester City on 15 January 2023.
