Players from Arsenal and Chelsea have been nominated for The Best FIFA Women’s Player award at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2022.
The world football governing body announced a 14-player list of nominees for the award via an official media release this afternoon. Arsenal have three nominees on the list while Chelsea have two.
Arsenal forward Beth Mead has been nominated after helping England to UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 glory in the summer. She won the Golden Boot and the Player of the Tournament award following her exploits on European football’s greatest stage. Mead’s Arsenal and England teammate Leah Williamson has also been nominated after inspiring so many with her passion and leadership. The Gunners’ final nominee is attacker Vivianne Miedema who enjoyed another fantastic year in front of goal. The Dutch international has taken up a deeper role for the North Londoners but that hasn’t disrupted her excellent contribution to Arsenal’s attacks and goalscoring.
Chelsea stars Jessie Fleming and Sam Kerr also find themselves named amongst the nominees. Fleming has now fully established herself as an important player for The Blues while she was again named the Canadian national team’s Women’s Player of the Year. Fleming’s teammate Kerr remains one of the very best players in the Barclays Women’s Super League. The player has scored some truly wonderful goals during the last calendar year. Both players were double winners with Chelsea in 2021/2022 and they look likely to collect more silverware this season.
In other news, Chelsea manager Emma Hayes features amongst the nominees for The Best FIFA Women’s Coach award along with England boss Sarina Wiegman while Ann-Katrin Berger (Chelsea) and Mary Earps (Manchester United) are in the running for The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award. Alessia Russo’s audacious back-heel goal for England against Sweden in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 semi-finals has been nominated for The FIFA Puskás Award.
