Liverpool not concentrating on a rivalry says Beard ahead of Manchester United clash

Liverpool manager Matt Beard says that this weekend’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United is just another game.

The Reds travel to the Leigh Sports Village to take on Marc Skinner’s Manchester United side on Sunday afternoon. It will be the first time that the two clubs have contested a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture since the 2019/2020 season.

In the men’s game, fixtures between Manchester United and Liverpool are fiercely contested matches with no love lost on the pitch or in the stands. The rivalry in the women’s game is very different and for Beard and his Liverpool side, they are looking at the occasion the same as any other.

“It’s just another game,” Beard said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We are playing Manchester United, we’ve got tough fixtures post-that as well.

“We just want to concentrate on ourselves and we are not concentrating on a rivalry or anything like that. It’s us concentrating on Liverpool and doing the most we can to get a result.”

Manchester United have lost just three of their last 19 home matches in the Barclays Women’s Super League, those defeats coming against Chelsea and Arsenal. Getting a result at the Leigh Sports Village won’t be easy for Liverpool but Beard believes that his side can go close to matching their opponents.

He said “The first thing is we need to believe in ourselves and believe we can get a result. We sat down with the players and looked at the statistical data against the top teams and we are not a million miles away. We have performed well in the majority of the games that we have played this season.

“It’s going to be a tough game, we know that, but we’ve got some very talented players in our squad and we need to make sure we concentrate on ourselves and play the game we know that we can play.”

Liverpool’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United kicks-off at 2.05pm on Sunday afternoon.
