Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner says that he is not concerned by the lack of goals from his side in recent weeks.
The Red Devils struggled to overcome Reading and second tier side Sunderland while they were held to a goalless draw by Everton last weekend.
Manchester United have registered 71 shots in their last three matches but they have scored just four goals (a conversion rate of one goal from every 17.75 shots). Head coach Skinner wants his side to be more clinical but he has no concerns over their finishing as they are creating many good goalscoring opportunities.
“I’ll always judge us on if we create the right amount of chances and if we are having shots,” Skinner said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “If they are all from outside of the penalty area, they are not the high quality chances that you need but in the game against Everton, they were really high quality chances that we should’ve converted so it doesn’t worry you at all. I’ll only ever judge the players on getting into those areas.
“In training this week, we’ve worked on quick-thinking around the area, how to leave the ball for your partner to finish in the right way, how you can find little gaps when it is tight and compact and how you can throw defenders and try and leave the goalkeepers something to see. The reality is that if we can utilise those skills and remain calm, we can take advantage.
“I’m so happy with the way that we attack. I know that Everton were happy with the way that they defended but we battered them. At the end of the game, they genuinely felt that they had won and that’s a team in fifth who I feel have done well this season.
“It’s business as usual, we have just got to create those chances and if we do that, we will put some away for sure.”
Manchester United’s latest Barclays Women’s Super League fixture is at Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon. Skinner knows that it will be a tough game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but he feels that his side will be well-prepared.
“Tottenham are investing, they are putting money into the team and that’s good for our game,” he said.
“The reality is that there are ways that we can hurt Tottenham but there are also some very good players that can hurt us so it is about trying to take control. We know all of the multiple shapes that they can play and we have done our homework as we always do.
“Our team have the mentality to try and beat anyone that they play against. We know how difficult it is in their stadium, in front of all of their fans, but we need to be ruthless and our players are stepping to a level now where they want to share that ruthlessness.”
Manchester United’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur kicks-off at 12pm.
