Leicester City manager Willie Kirk says that his side believe that their fixture at Liverpool is a game that they can win.
The Foxes are bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table after collecting just three points from an available 33 so far this season. This weekend sees Leicester City travel to eighth-placed Liverpool, a team that have lost three of their first four matches in all competitions in early 2023.
Leicester City have gone into the second half of the season in a much stronger position in terms of the level of their performances and the quality of their personnel. The Foxes now have a fighting chance of survival and manager Kirk believes that his side can beat anyone outside of the Barclays Women’s Super League’s top four on their day.
“Every game outside of the teams in the top four, I feel we can compete in and win on our day if we play to the level that we can play at and that we have shown,” Kirk said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “The Brighton game especially sticks out as a real top performance and a top result.
“We have done our homework properly and we’ve had a really good training week. We are going into the game and we feel that we can win it.”
Leicester City’s game against Liverpool is one of two that they have in hand over 11th-placed Reading. Kirk and his players see this weekend’s fixture as a real opportunity to claw back some ground in the battle for survival.
He said “The added significance is that it is one of the games in hand, that’s probably the main thing for me. You look at the league table and we are one of the teams that have only played 11, some have played 12, some have played 13 like Reading for example; it gives us an opportunity to use those games in hand.
“Those games in hand are only useful if you can be productive and that’s what we are planning to be on Sunday.”
Leicester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
