Blackburn Rovers announce departure of manager Donnelly

Blackburn Rovers manager Gemma Donnelly has left the Barclays Women’s Championship club by mutual consent.

The Lancashire club announced the news this evening via a post on their official club website.

Donnelly has been in her role since November 2013. She was initially employed on an interim basis before soon being appointed Blackburn Rovers’ permanent manager. Donnelly has overseen the successful transformation of the club as they have risen up the pyramid to the elite game.

Under Donnelly’s guidance, Blackburn Rovers won three consecutive FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division titles and two Premier League Cups. The club were promoted to the Barclays Women’s Championship in 2019 after winning the play-off final.

Prior to Donnelly’s appointment as manager, she spent six-and-a-half years working with Blackburn Rovers’ Centre of Excellence. Donnelly has always maintained an eye for up and coming talent, she has regularly moved for WSL Academy League players during her time in charge at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

Donnelly leaves Blackburn Rovers with the club having recently secured their Barclays Women’s Championship status for another season. It is understood that she will now take the opportunity to pursue fresh opportunities.

A further announcement on the managerial situation at Blackburn Rovers will be made in due course.
