Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor has confirmed the news that goalkeeper Sandy MacIver will miss the remainder of the season with a groin injury.
The 24-year-old pulled out of international action with England earlier this month and returned to her club for treatment.
With the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 now just three months away, there were concerns over the severity of MacIver’s injury but Manchester City boss Taylor believes that the player will be fit for selection if required, although her club season is over.
“I think she will probably recover in time for the World Cup,” Taylor said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in a Manchester City press conference.
“The injury is around the groin abductor area. It was something that she had while she was here with us and something that got worse while she was away with England.
“Unfortunately, it is a fairly severe injury but if she was selected for the World Cup, she would be back in time for that.”
England head coach Sarina Wiegman is expected to announce her 23-player squad for the tournament at the end of next month. The Lionesses are already missing the likes of Beth Mead and Leah Williamson while there are fitness doubts hanging over a small number of players. Wiegman is likely to select either MacIver or Aston Villa’s Hannah Hampton as her third-choice goalkeeper for the tournament.
