Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion claimed another point towards securing Barclays Women’s Super League survival with a 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening.
Both teams came out fighting in North London, the importance of three points hanging over everyone’s heads. The game was lively and both goalkeepers were tested early on as the teams wanted to get off the mark quickly.
With 10 minutes played, Elisabeth Terland latched onto Becky Spencer’s spilt ball and turned it in from close range to open the scoring for Brighton & Hove Albion, however, their celebrations were short-lived with Spurs having an almost immediate response. Beth England fired in the equaliser just two minutes later to spark an eruption of noise from the stands.
The remainder of the first half was very end-to-end with both teams enjoying spells of possession and looking like they could add to the scoreline. However, there was nothing in it when the teams went down the tunnel for half-time.
The game’s intensity continued into the second half, but there were no real chances on goal for the first 20 minutes. That was until Lee Geum-min entered the pitch for The Seagulls. Her rocket from outside of the box in the 65th minute sailed past onlooking Spurs players, and the diving Spencer, to find the back of the net and put the visitors ahead once again.
As the game entered the final 20 minutes, all of the chances seemed to be falling for Brighton & Hove Albion, whose momentum since Lee came on had gone up a notch. However, just like in the first half, England was on hand to bring the game level. After taking on four defenders, she was never going to miss when she came face-to-face with Lydia Williams.
There were smiles all round as after a year out with injury, Ria Percival entered the pitch for Spurs to play the final 15 minutes of the game.
Despite late chances, neither side were able to find the back of the net again. The result leaves Spurs in ninth position in the Barclays Women’s Super League table while Brighton & Hove Albion are 11th.
