Arsenal’s assistant coach Lydia Bedford has left the club to take up a position at Brentford.
The Gunners announced the news this morning via a post on their official club website.
Bedford will become the head coach of Brentford’s men’s under-18s side. It is a ground-breaking move which sees a female coach make a rare transfer to the men’s game.
Bedford is well-equipped to have success in her new role. She is one of the most highly-rated young female coaches in the the English game. Bedford has a good track record with her tactical and statistical analysis while she has a wealth of coaching experience.
In the early days of her coaching career, Bedford worked within the England youth set-up. In December 2021, she stepped into the senior game, taking up a head coach role at Leicester City. Bedford steered The Foxes to Barclays Women’s Super League safety in 2021/2022 before being sacked by the club in November last year following a winless start to the season.
Bedford joined Arsenal as an assistant coach in February and she has been an excellent support to head coach Jonas Eidevall.
After showing so much promise in the women’s game, Bedford will now be hoping to prove her quality in the men’s game at new club Brentford.
