Sheffield United have announced the news that they will begin to transition towards operating a full-time playing model.
FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Blades this afternoon.
Sheffield United have been competing alongside a number of full-time clubs with greater financial resources in the Barclays Women’s Championship in recent seasons but they will now receive further increased backing themselves from the club.
It has been reported that The Blades will begin transitioning towards a full-time playing model while they will be introducing a Professional Game Academy. Some players and staff will sign full-time contracts in the coming weeks while Sheffield United will again play their home fixtures at Bramall Lane next season.
Sheffield United have been awarded a Category One Professional Game Academy Licence by The Football Association and captain Sophie Barker will take up a dual-role as academy manager.
Speaking following the announcement, Sheffield United’s chief executive officer, Stephen Bettis, said “During an increasingly exciting time for women’s football, we are delighted to take these steps at Sheffield United to reaffirm our commitment to our women’s team and its continued development.
“The investment in Sheffield United Women from our supporters as well as the club in recent years has been clear to see, and we’re all looking forward to continuing this journey together.
“As with Paul Heckingbottom and the men’s team, the board will support Jonathan Morgan and the women’s team as much as possible to continue the club’s pursuit for success.”
Sheffield United finished their latest season in the Barclays Women’s Championship in eighth position in the league table.
