Former Leicester City forward Ellen Jones has joined Barclays Women’s Championship club Sunderland on a free transfer.
The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning. Jones joins the Wearsiders following a successful trial with the club.
Jones joined former club Leicester City at the start of last season but she struggled for game time at The King Power Stadium as was limited to a couple of appearances in the domestic cups. The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Coventry United where she scored one goal in 12 outings in all competitions.
The youngster has potential and Sunderland will be hoping to get the best out of her this season.
After securing Jones’ services, Sunderland manager Melanie Reay said “Ellen spent a week with us leading into the Celtic game and showed us what she is all about. She can play off both feet, has a good engine, a tenacious work ethic and an impressive attitude to learn. She will add further depth to our attacking options.”
Jones becomes Sunderland boss Reay’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window following the recent additions of Mary McAteer, Katie Kitching, Natasha Fenton, Jenna Dear and Amy Goddard.
