Chelsea continue to lead the way in the Barclays Women’s Super League after recording a 3-0 win at Everton this afternoon.
The hosts came into the match looking to bounce back from their 7-0 FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup defeat at Manchester United in midweek but opponents Chelsea continued their good run by recording a comprehensive victory which keeps them at the top of the table.
Everton had a chance to shoot at goal early on through summer signing Heather Payne. She sent the ball towards the corner of the Chelsea net but her effort was well-blocked by visiting keeper Ann-Katrin Berger. At the other end, Sam Kerr received the ball and took aim for goal but she was unable to trouble Courtney Brosnan.
The first goal of the game came in the 14th minute courtesy of Jessie Fleming. A high pass was played to Kerr whose header was only cleared as far as Fleming and she thumped the ball into the back of the net.
Payne again looked lively as she drove into the box and found Everton teammate Justine Vanhaevermaet. The Belgian international was unable to beat Berger with her shot.
Everton almost got the equaliser just before half-time. Martina Piemonte found Payne who drove forward and played a pass to Sara Holmgaard, however, her effort was saved by Berger. Vanhaevermaet put the ball into the back of the net from the rebound but the whistle was blown for offside and the goal was disallowed.
Chelsea doubled their lead just after the hour mark through Kerr. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd received the ball out wide and she drilled in a low cross for Kerr to convert from close range.
Substitute Aggie Beever-Jones then made it three for Chelsea in second half stoppage time when she cut in from the right and fired the ball into the top corner of the Everton net.
Victory for Chelsea means that they will end the weekend top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table while Everton are still searching for consistency in the bottom half.
