‘There’s no panic’ – Sørensen calm despite Everton’s difficult start

Brian Sørensen insists that there is no panic at Everton despite the club’s difficult start to the new Barclays Women’s Super League season.

The Blue Girls have taken just one win from their opening seven league matches and they currently find themselves in 10th position in the table.

When speaking to the media ahead of this afternoon’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Aston Villa, Sørensen said that there is no panic and that a victory would move his side close to last season’s position.

“Last year, after eight games we had nine points and if we win on Sunday, we will have eight points,” Sørensen said. “We had a really good season last year.

“There’s no panic. We know that in many of the games that we’ve played, we’ve deserved more. Looking at expected goals against us and goals that we should’ve scored, we should be about sixth in the table but it is the real table that matters and we know that.

“It is important that we get a win so we can move into the international break on a high then we have two important games after that.

“Last year, we had 12 points at Christmas and it is still possible for us to do that again, so that’s what we are focusing on.”

Everton’s latest opponents Aston Villa lost their opening five league matches before securing back-to-back wins. Sørensen believes that both sides are capable of more than the league table suggests.

He said “Did they deserve the results that they’ve had? Maybe not if you look at the games and how they ended up. You need luck to swing in your favour.

“I don’t think either of us will end up where we are now because the teams and squads are too good for that. The teams have to turn it around.

“They’re a very good team with very good players and they can cause any team problems. They were close to beating United and Arsenal which are two very good teams. When you’re not winning, it has an effect on you but they have managed to win their last two games.

“It’s going to be an exciting game at Villa Park with both teams wanting to show what they’re made of.”

Everton’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Aston Villa at Villa Park kicks-off at 4.30pm this afternoon.
