Bristol City head coach Lauren Smith says that Sunday’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Liverpool provides an opportunity for her side to build consistency going into the second half of the season.
The Robins host The Reds at Ashton Gate in what promises to be a closely-contested tie between two Barclays Women’s Super League sides.
Bristol City went into the winter break bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table and while survival is the priority, head coach Smith sees positives in performing well in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup this weekend.
“The WSL is obviously the main priority for us but the FA Cup is exciting and it allows us to get a bit of consistency,” Smith said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “A good performance or result on Sunday could lead straight into the next game.
“It’s all focus for this week, we want to win every game that we are in. We are going to give it a good go.”
The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in their previous meeting at Prenton Park before Christmas. Smith went on to say that Bristol City proved that they can frustrate a tough opponent with that score draw.
She said “There were a few positives. We frustrated them a little bit and they had to change their game plan in the second half then we had to adapt towards that. We learnt that we can frustrate a team that are higher up the league than us.
“We want to take more of that into Sunday. Can we frustrate them and try to create more chances than we did originally? We know where their strengths are and where they can hit us hard. It’s another test for us.”
