‘It’s been a very long time coming’ – Sørensen reflects on Everton’s first home win

Everton manager Brian Sørensen was pleased to see his side finally record a home league win at the seventh time of asking on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Girls defeated West Ham United 2-0 at Walton Hall Park as they put an end to their long winless run on home soil.

When speaking to the media after the match, Everton boss Sørensen said that he was pleased to see his side collect their first home win whilst highlighting the positive impact that the substitutes made on the contest.

“It’s been a very long time coming,” Sørensen said. “I think today, we controlled the game first half but when we didn’t start to break into the organisation, we became too impatient and we would go to try and score every time instead of dropping a bit more and then finding the right moments, so we talked about that at half-time.

“The subs came in and made a difference. The front-three were working really hard and when Martina [Piemonte] came on, she gave us something different and scored a good goal. Yaya [Aurora Galli] showed fantastic finishing also.”

Italian international Piemonte has had a tough start to life at Everton but Sørensen is hoping that everyone can now reap the rewards of having her at the club.

He said “We know her qualities. She was thrown into playing the first two games which was maybe not the plan because you want to have a slow introduction. It’s just been a bumpy road and the one thing she needs, everybody needs and our team needs is consistency. For some reason, we just haven’t had that but hopefully, going forward, we can have a bit more.”

Everton return to action following the international break when they travel to The Joie Stadium to face Manchester City on Saturday 2 March 2024.
