Skinner confident that West Ham will stay up despite defeat at Everton

West Ham United manager Rehanne Skinner says that she is confident that her side will remain in the Barclays Women’s Super League despite their 2-0 defeat at Everton yesterday.

The two sides were deadlocked at 0-0 until the final stages of the match. Everton netted two late goals as they claimed their first home league win of the season and added a fresh twist to West Ham United’s survival bid.

When speaking to the media after the match, West Ham United boss Skinner admitted that she was bitterly disappointed with the scoreline.

“Obviously, we are really disappointed with the result,” Skinner said. “I don’t think we were giving enough support to the player on the ball as we have been doing in recent games.

“I think collectively, we still had some good chances in the first half and if we make the most of those, then it changes the feel of it a little bit.

“Overall, yes, we are disappointed with the performance in general but obviously, there are some other bits that we can take out of that and try to utilise moving forward and into the next game.”

As a result of the loss, West Ham United have dropped to 10th place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table, although they remain five points above the relegation zone. Skinner is confident that The Hammers will avoid relegation given their improved form over the last couple of months.

She said “I’m confident. The only way we are looking is up but obviously, we’ve got to make sure we get results and performances and that’s the bottom line. We feel confident with the players we’ve brought in and we feel confident in where the squad is now. We’ve just got to make sure we keep delivering to the level we are capable of.”

West Ham United return to action after the international break with a home fixture against Manchester United on Sunday 3 March 2024.
