Manchester City remain at the top of the FA Women’s Super League table after beating struggling Bristol City 1-0 at The Academy Stadium this evening.
Gemma Bonner netted the only goal of the game after just two minutes as Manchester City maintained their one-point lead on second-placed side Chelsea.
The key move of the game saw midfielder Caroline Weir deliver a free-kick into the box and teammate Bonner was on-hand to bundle the ball home.
Some brave defending from Gemma Evans denied Ellen White a second goal for Manchester City while Weir saw two efforts saved by Bristol City goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley.
Interim Manchester City boss Alan Mahon was taking charge of the club for the first time and he saw his side come out firing on all cylinders in the second half but Baggaley was on top form, making a trio of stops. England striker White also saw an effort saved by the Bristol City keeper when she got a shot away from a tight angle.
There is plenty of work to be done by Manchester City under Mahon’s guidance in the coming weeks but tonight it was simply a case of ‘points win prizes’ with the league leaders doing enough to get the over the line
