England end disappointing SheBelieves Cup campaign with another defeat

England have completed their participation in the SheBelieves Cup 2020 with a hugely disappointing 1-0 defeat to Spain at the Toyota Stadium in Dallas.

Spanish substitute Alexia Putellas’ bullet header seven minutes from time was enough to inflict a second defeat in three matches on England and increase the pressure on the Lionesses boss Phil Neville once again.

England were second best in the early stages of the match but Nikita Parris and Ellen White soon looked lively in the final third, the former striking an effort wide in the 10th minute. The pair linked well throughout the first half but disappointingly, neither player was able to trouble opposition keeper Sandra Panos.

Spain really should have been ahead early in the second half when Putellas crossed for Aitana Bonmati but the player failed to get clear connection on the ball.

The Lionesses soon had goalkeeper Carly Telford to thank when Ainhoa Moraza raced towards goal but the Chelsea keeper blocked the Spaniard’s shot.

Virginia Torrecilla then fired an effort over the bar before a rare England sight of goal resulted in Chloe Kelly dragging an effort wide moments prior to the same player striking the ball into the side-netting.

Spain took the lead in the 83rd-minute when a corner kick delivery found the head of Putellas who powered the ball home.

It could have got worse for England but both Jennifer Hermoso and Lucia Garcia wasted late chances as the match ended 1-0.

It has been a hugely disappointing campaign for England who are likely to finish the tournament in third place. There is now significant pressure on manager Neville ahead of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 which will be hosted by England.
