PREVIEW: England v Spain

England will be hoping that they can finish their SheBelieves Cup 2020 campaign on a positive note this evening when they take on Spain at the Toyota Stadium in Dallas.

The Lionesses returned to winning ways by beating Japan 1-0 in their second match at the tournament on Sunday and victory over Spain is likely to see Phil Neville’s side finish as runners-up.

England could yet retain their SheBelieves crown, however, it seems highly unlikely with Japan needing to defeat world champions the USA in the other match, before the Americans’ superior goal difference even comes into the equation.

The Lionesses boss Neville has injury concerns to contend with ahead of his side’s meeting with Spain. Defenders Rachel Daly, Steph Houghton and Millie Bright are all carrying knocks, as are midfield pair Jordan Nobbs and Leah Williamson. The quintet are likely to be assessed before kick-off in Dallas. With Ellen White having come off the bench to net the winning goal against Japan, Neville could reinstall the Manchester City forward to the starting XI.

Spain’s 1-0 defeat to the USA on Sunday was their first loss in five matches. Jorge Vilda’s side ran England close in their last meeting, an international friendly at The County Ground in Swindon 11 months ago. The Lionesses took a two-goal lead in that match before Spain came on strong in the second half and pulled a goal back as they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat.

The latest meeting is scheduled to kick-off at 9.15pm and will be screened live on BBC Four, BBC iPlayer and on the BBC Sport website.
