PREVIEW: Liverpool v Bristol Academy

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League is back again this evening with another re-run of a classic encounter.

This evening’s pick is the 2013 FA Women’s Super League 1 title decider between Liverpool and Bristol Academy which was played at the Halton Stadium in Widnes.

Ahead of this evening’s re-run, we preview what was set to be a mouth-watering final day of the season fixture which saw two of pre-season’s unlikely potential champions go into battle for the title.

Going into the final day, Liverpool held a two-point advantage on Bristol Academy while Arsenal’s nine-year dominance in the top flight had come to an end with The Gunners being six points off the summit. Liverpool had won 4-3 at Bristol Academy earlier in the season with Louise Fors, Katrin Omarsdottir, Nicole Rolser and Gemma Bonner on target for The Reds.

Liverpool’s form going into their clash with Bristol Academy was pretty much impeccable. The Reds had won their last six matches while their last four victories were by margins of two clear goals or more. Bristol Academy went into the match unbeaten in five games themselves, a run dating back to their 4-3 home defeat to Liverpool a month-and-a-half earlier.

Matt Beard’s Liverpool side contained a number of well-known faces including defenders Lucy Bronze and Gemma Bonner and midfielders Fara Williams, Katie Zelem and Kate Longhurst. Much-travelled forward Natasha Dowie was their top scorer with 13 goals. Loren Dykes was a member of the Bristol Academy side in 2013, just like she is for Bristol City under manager Tanya Oxtoby in the present day. Other notable members of the 2013 squad included goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain and midfielders Angharad James and Natasha Harding.

This evening’s re-run kicks-off at 7.45pm and will be screened on the official Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s Facebook page and on the FA Player.
