Chelsea fans were left thrilled for what was to come after watching new signing Guro Reiten put in a ‘Player of the Match’ performance for Norway as they defeated Nigeria 3-0 in their opening group match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 in Reims.
The 25-year-old joined The Blues from Norwegian club LSK Kvinner ahead of last summer’s tournament and Norway’s fixture against Nigeria gave Chelsea fans the first opportunity to see their new star in action.
We look back on that night in the North East of France as Reiten helped Norway get their FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 campaign up and running.
Norway started the brighter of the two sides at the Stade Auguste-Delaune with Reiten noticeably lively on the left. Chelsea’s latest addition opened the scoring on 17 minutes when some clever work from teammate Caroline Graham Hansen opened up space for her to shoot. Reiten’s effort took a deflection before nestling in the corner of the Nigerian net.
Reiten was involved again as Norway doubled their lead in the 34th minute. The midfielder played the ball through to Lisa-Marie Utland who lashed her effort high into the roof of the net.
Norway were to go into the break with a 3-0 lead. Isabell Herlovsen put a dangerous cross into the six-yard box and unfortunate Nigerian defender Osinachi Ohale could only direct the ball into her own net.
Nigeria were more organised in the second half without really threatening the Norwegian goal while Graham Hansen was unlucky not to make it 4-0 late in the half when her shot was pushed wide by the keeper.
This was not only a comprehensive performance by the Norwegians but also a perfect Chelsea audition for midfielder Reiten who proved that The Blues had acquired the services of yet another world class player.
