Former Chelsea and England international defender Anita Asante has completed a move to Aston Villa according to reports on the club’s official website.
The 35-year-old centre-back left her former club at the end of the 2019/2020 Barclays FA Women’s Super League season following an injury-plagued second spell at Kingsmeadow.
With Asante having had bad luck with those long term injuries, it was unknown whether the player was considering hanging up her boots, however, it has today been confirmed that Asante will play on for at least one more year after signing on at newly-promoted Barclays FA Women’s Super League club Aston Villa.
Asante becomes the second signing of the summer at The Banks’s Stadium with Villa boss Gemma Davies having also secured the services of former Birmingham City midfielder Chloe Arthur last week.
Villa’s latest signing Asante has enjoyed a 17-year senior career which has seen her win several league titles and domestic cups. The player was a member of a hugely successful Arsenal side between 2003 and 2008 prior to two spells with Chelsea. She has also played in the American National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) as well as in Sweden with Goteborg and FC Rosengard where she again won a range of silverware.
Despite ending last season top of the FA Women’s Championship, Aston Villa only had the second-best defence but the signing of Asante should add further stability to the back line ahead of the club’s debut campaign in the top flight.
