Sheffield United have delved into the transfer market for the first time this summer, confirming the capture of Aston Villa’s top scorer from last season, Melissa Johnson.
Johnson had recently parted ways with Villa and speculation was rife about where her next destination would be. Some tipped her to make the step up to the top tier and join another Barclays FA Women’s Super League side.
The striker has instead opted to remain in the FA Women’s Championship where she has flourished so much in recent years. Her move to Sheffield United was broadcast on The Blades’ official website earlier today.
Upon signing for The Blades, Johnson told the club’s official media channels “I’m excited to be a part of this club.
“I’m around some familiar faces and I want to help build on what the team did last season.
“I’m here to work hard on and off the pitch and give my all to the club every game and I believe this is the best decision and the right place to begin a new journey.”
Sheffield United finished as runners-up to Aston Villa in the FA Women’s Championship last season and the recruitment of Johnson is a big move if they are hoping to go one step further in 2020/2021. The Blades already have last season’s Golden Boot winner on their books in Katie Wilkinson but they now boast all three top scorers from the 2019/2020 FA Women’s Championship. Wilkinson topped the goalscoring charts last season with 15 goals while her Sheffield United teammate Jade Pennock came third with 11 goals. Sandwiched between the pair was their newest attacking partner Johnson with 12 goals.
While the competition will be very strong in the FA Women’s Championship this season, The Blades could be the ones to beat given the immense talent which they boast in their attack. The signing of Johnson is a major statement which has been issued by Sheffield United’s to their title rivals.
