Lisa Evans netted a hat-trick as Arsenal eventually saw off a stubborn Tottenham Hotspur side 4-0 in their Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Meadow Park this evening.
The game was goalless for 73 minutes until Jordan Nobbs lobbed in the opener. That goal opened the floodgates with Evans netting a treble within the space of 16 minutes.
Good goalscoring chances were at a premium in the first half, although the clear sights of goal came Arsenal’s way. Caitlin Foord saw a headed effort strike the bar after six minutes before Vivianne Miedema drilled a shot wide across goal later in the half.
The Gunners thought that they had broken the deadlock early in the second half when Katie McCabe lashed the ball into the net but the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.
Alanna Kennedy then glanced a header off target for Spurs at the other end when she was completely unmarked in the area, the visitors’ best chance of the game, while McCabe went close with a free kick for Arsenal.
Joe Montemurro’s side finally broke the deadlock 17 minutes from time when Jordan Nobbs lobbed Spurs keeper Becky Spencer before Evans placed home a second a minute later as Arsenal all but confirmed their place in Thursday’s semi-final.
There was still time for the home side to net two further goals. First, Danielle van de Donk played in Evans to fire home her second and Arsenal’s third before the same player completed her hat-trick in second half injury-time after getting on the end of a Beth Mead cross.
Arsenal will travel to the winners of the Leicester City/Manchester City quarter-final tie on Thursday evening to compete for a place in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley.
