Manchester City midfielder wins Scottish Player of the Year award

Manchester City midfielder Caroline Weir has been crowned the Scotland BT Women’s Player of the Year 2020.

The 25-year-old Dunfermline-born midfielder saw off Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert, Everton’s Claire Emslie and Reading’s Emma Mitchell to land the award.

The Scottish Football Association announced Weir’s award win via their official Twitter account this evening.

Weir made seven appearances for her country throughout 2020 and scored two goals, both of which came in the 3-0 UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying victory over Albania at Tynecastle in October. The midfielder now has 75 caps to her name in her seven years as a senior international while she has netted 11 goals.

For her club, Weir helped Manchester City to a 2019/2020 Vitality Women’s FA Cup success while she was instrumental in their qualification for the 2020/2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League. The midfielder has arguably enjoyed some of her best club form in recent weeks. Weir provided a hat-trick of assists in Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over Everton at Walton Hall Park last weekend while her 94th-minute strike handed her side a 2-1 win against Arsenal at The Academy Stadium yesterday.

Weir’s Scotland BT Women’s Player of the Year success ends Chelsea forward Cuthbert’s two-year reign as the nation’s top player. She is just the third player to win the award whilst representing an English club, Arsenal’s Kim Little having been the other recipient of the award in 2013.
