Chelsea and Manchester City went toe-to-toe in a battle for the FA Women’s Super League 1 title in 2017/2018.
In the end, it was Emma Hayes’ side who came out on top with a six-point advantage on City who claimed the second UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification spot.
FA Women’s Super League Full-Time go back to April 2018 as we review one of the decisive results in the title race as Manchester City took on mid-table Reading at The Academy Stadium.
Nick Cushing’s side went into their meeting with The Royals three points behind league leaders Chelsea with the opportunity to pull level with The Blues. It proved to be a big opportunity missed as a Reading side who could never be underestimated claimed a surprise 2-0 win.
City had plenty of the ball and created goalscoring opportunities throughout the first half but they were to concede 10 minutes before the interval when Remi Allen directed the ball home with a stunning bicycle kick.
The hosts were left with a mountain to climb early in the second half when Jo Potter crossed for Kirsty Pearce to head home a second goal for Kelly Chambers’ Reading side.
Potter was dismissed for a professional foul nine minutes from time and despite plenty of pressure from Manchester City at the death, the hosts could not find the back of the net on an unusually blunt afternoon in-front of goal for Cushing’s side.
Manchester City would go on to win four of their final six league games but it would not be enough as Chelsea went on to claim a second league title.
