The United States have this evening confirmed that Manchester City midfielder Sam Mewis will not join the squad for this month’s SheBelieves Cup.
The 28-year-old, who was the 2020 US Soccer Female Player of the year, sustained an ankle injury whilst representing The Stars and Stripes in the second of two international friendly matches against Colombia last month.
Mewis returned to England following the conclusion of the United States’ January camp but she has struggled to overcome her injury, missing Manchester City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures against West Ham United, Arsenal and Manchester United.
US Soccer have this evening issued an official press release to FAWSL Full-Time confirming that Mewis will not report for international duty ahead of this month’s SheBelieves Cup. The player was initially selected in head coach Vlatko Andonovski’s squad for the tournament, however, Mewis has now been replaced by Jaelin Howell of Florida State Seminoles, a player who has been capped by the United States on just one previous occasion.
The United States begin their SheBelieves Cup with a fixture against Canada on Friday. They will then take on Brazil two days later before ending their tournament against rank outsiders Argentina.
Mewis’ Manchester City teammates Abby Dahlkemper and Rose Lavelle have been selected for the squad and are due to report for international duty imminently.
