Arsenal’s summer signing Iwabuchi nets brace and assists for Japan

Recent Arsenal signing Mana Iwabuchi netted two goals and provided an assist for another as Japan defeated Ukraine 8-0 in Hiroshima this morning.

The 28-year-old forward, who recently joined The Gunners on a free transfer, set up the opening goal for Nadeshiko before netting two of her own as Asako Takakura’s side made easy work of their European opponents.

Japan were ahead after just five minutes at the Edion Stadium when Iwabuchi’s low ball across the box was directed into the net by Yuzuho Shiokoshi.

Iwabuchi added Japan’s second goal when a cross landed at her feet and she powered the ball into the roof of the net before youngster Saori Takarada fired in a third.

Japan would go into the interval 4-0 up thanks to another goal from Shiokoshi in the 41st minute.

Arsenal forward Iwabuchi netted her second goal of the game 13 minutes into the second half. Ukraine failed to deal with a cross from the left and the ball eventually fell to Iwabuchi who somewhat scuffed her effort into the corner of the net. The player was then substituted with 14 minutes to go.

Japan rounded-off a comprehensive victory with a late flurry of goals. Hina Sugita found the back of the net to make it 6-0 with 10 minutes remaining before Mina Tanaka converted a penalty kick. Nadeshiko finished the game with eight goals with Yuka Momiki firing home the final goal in second half stoppage time.

Takakura’s side are back in action on Sunday when they face Mexico in Tochigi.
