Chelsea pair Magda Eriksson and Sam Kerr were both substituted as a result of injuries as Sweden recorded a goalless draw with Australia in Kalmar this evening.
Eriksson was brought off by Swedish head coach Peter Gerhardsson after half an hour after sustaining a calf injury while Australian forward Kerr was substituted late in the second half, her withdrawal may have been more of a precaution.
The match at the Guldfågeln Arena saw two sides who will compete in next month’s Olympic Games go head-to-head. Both sides have been drawn in Group G at Tokyo 2020 and they will meet again in Saitama on 24 July. With the start of the Games now a little over a month away, the injuries sustained by Eriksson and Kerr this evening may leave their respective head coaches worried.
Swedish full-back Julia Roddar went closest to opening the scoring in the first half of this evening’s contest but Australian goalkeeper Teagan Micah was alert to the danger. Kerr threatened the Swedish goal in the second half but her effort rattled the frame before she was withdrawn minutes later after picking up her knock.
Both players are now expected to be assessed with further information to be released in due course.
