Chelsea duo named in Swedish squad for Olympic Games

Chelsea pair Madga Eriksson and Jonna Andersson have been named in the Sweden squad for the upcoming Olympic Games in Japan.

Eriksson and Andersson are two of 18 players selected by Swedish head coach Peter Gerhardsson while Blues keeper Zecira Musovic is one of four reserve players.

The Swedish Football Association, the SvFF, announced Gerhardsson’s squad this morning on their official website.

Centre-back Eriksson has been one of Sweden’s most consistent performers in recent years. The player has collected 70 senior caps while she has a goal tally of eight, an impressive return for a defender.

Chelsea teammate Andersson has 56 senior caps to her name and she recently opened her goalscoring account for her country. The player can operate in a number of positions, something which will have appealed to head coach Gerhardsson with Sweden restricted to that smaller squad of just 18 players for the Games.

Sweden have been drawn in Group G for this summer’s Women’s Football Tournament. The nation begin their group campaign with a fixture against world champions, the United States, in Tokyo on 21 July. Gerhardsson’s side then face Australia in Saitama on 24 July before completing their group fixtures with a match against New Zealand in Rifu on 27 July.

Sweden were runners-up in their last appearance at an Olympic Games back in 2016.
