Caroline Weir hit a late deflected equaliser as Team GB came from behind to draw 1-1 with Canada in their final group match at the Olympic Games’ Women’s Football Tournament this afternoon.
Adriana Leon had opened the scoring for Bev Priestman’s Canadian side early in the second half but Weir came to Team GB’s rescue with a heavily deflected effort which found the far corner of the opposition net.
The first half produced little in the way of quality goalscoring chances. Jill Scott slotted in Rachel Daly just after the half-hour but she was denied by a brave block by Jayde Riviere.
A rare mistake by Team GB goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck handed Leon the opportunity to shoot at an open goal early in the second half but Millie Bright stood tall and blocked the shot.
That moment proved to be a warning for Hege Riise’s side with Canada breaking the deadlock with their next attack. Ashley Lawrence broke down the left and she delivered a low cross for Leon to sweep home at the back post.
Team GB pressed for an equaliser and Weir was desperately unlucky when she saw a shot come back off the crossbar and then the post before Ellen White fired an effort on the turn straight at Canadian keeper Stephanie Labbe.
Canada looked set to claim the three points and top spot in the group until Weir finally got her reward five minutes from time when her effort from distance took a wicked deflection before finding the far corner of the net.
Team GB will now look ahead to a quarter-final match against Australia on Friday morning.
