Manchester United announce Skinner as new boss

Manchester United have announced the news that former Orlando Pride and Birmingham City boss Marc Skinner has become their new head coach on a two-year deal with the option of a further year.

The 38-year-old fills the vacancy left by former Manchester United boss Casey Stoney who left the club at the end of last season.

Skinner spent a little over two years in charge of Birmingham City between December 2016 and January 2019 before departing for the United States. He won 48.15% of his matches in charge of the Blues, guiding the club to the Women’s FA Cup final in 2017. Skinner’s Birmingham City side were notoriously difficult to beat and were a match for the very best sides in the English game.

After leaving Birmingham City, Skinner took up a position at National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club Orlando Pride. He won just nine of his 45 games in charge but he did however guide The Pride to a much-improved run of form in the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup.

After being appointed Manchester United’s new head coach, Skinner said “I am excited and proud to become head coach at Manchester United. I’m looking forward to working closely with the staff and this talented group of players. Our focus is to build on everything they have already achieved in the women’s game. It’s an exciting opportunity to lead the team into what will be another competitive WSL season; I want us to achieve success together and our aim is to give the fans a team they can continue to be proud of.”

Skinner’s supporting coaching staff are expected to be revealed in due course.
