Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward says that the pressure will be on Manchester United when the two sides contest their latest Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture at The Banks’s Stadium this evening.
The Villans have already secured another season of Barclays FA Women’s Super League football while Manchester United go into this evening’s game needing maximum points to keep their European qualification dream alive.
When speaking to the media ahead of the match, Aston Villa boss Ward was quick to highlight the fact that the pressure is on Manchester United going into the game.
“They’re Manchester United Football Club, they should be going for Champions League, similar to the men,” Ward said.
“The pressure is on them, the only pressure on us is what we want to do in-house. We are certainly not here to make up the numbers and we will not be turning up, banking up, hoping for the best, we will continue to play the way that we want to play. There’s no pressure on us whatsoever, the pressure is on Manchester United to come and beat us, it’s as simple as that.”
Aston Villa have lost six out of six this season against the current top four but Ward went on to say that she believes that progress is being made by her side in the games against the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s elite.
She said “Yes, I’d say so (Villa are improving), certainly the way that we have adapted post-Christmas. We have a mentality that we don’t fear anyone, we want to go and give everyone a game now.
“We are in a position where we are safe, we have exceeded what we wanted to achieve so now it’s a case of going out there and trying to express ourselves and try to take points from all three games.”
Aston Villa’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United kicks-off at 6pm.
