Chelsea confirm departure of long-serving midfielder Spence

Chelsea have confirmed that long-serving midfielder Drew Spence will leave the club at the end of the season.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official press release issued by Chelsea this evening.

The 29-year-old joined The Blues from Fulham back in 2008 and she has contributed to Chelsea’s complete transformation into an elite club in both European and world football. Spence has scored 50 goals in 238 appearances in all competitions for The Blues while she has lifted 11 major domestic trophies with the club. Spence’s game time has become more limited in recent years and it is now therefore the right time for the player to move on for a fresh challenge.

Speaking following the announcement, Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said “Drew has epitomised everything that we have been about in my tenure. She’s watched the club grow from amateur to one of the top teams in Europe and she’s been instrumental in that journey.

“I’ve watched Drew grow from a young player and blossomed as a senior pro. I’m excited for her next steps, she’s fully deserving of everything she’s achieved and again she will join a group of legends for what she has done at this football club and I know everyone here will really miss her.”

Spence will hope to leave Chelsea on the back of winning two more trophies. The Blues could lift the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title on Sunday before contesting the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday 15 May.
