Coventry United have announced the news that they are returning to a part-time operating model in the short term.
Tomorrow will see The Red and Greens temporarily make the switch back to part-time. Owner Lewis Taylor confirmed the news in an open letter which was issued just a short time ago. The move has been made due to a number of factors including increased budget expectations, increased gas prices affecting the club’s parent company, future compliance of the salary cap and the need to build sustained commercial activity within Coventry United.
It should be noted that the club remain committed to competing in the elite game and it is hoped that the return to part-time operations will allow Coventry United to stabilise and plan for a healthier full-time model over the longer term.
As a result of the announcement, some players are expected to move on in a bid to retain full-time careers while Coventry United will be hoping to appoint a new management team and attract new players themselves in the coming weeks.
Coventry United endured a difficult 2021/2022 campaign which saw the club deducted 10 points as a result of their former owners’ decision to apply for liquidation mid-season. The Red and Greens battled back from the brink with current owner Taylor saving the club in January before Coventry United wiped out the 10-point deduction in the second half of the season. The Warwickshire club secured Barclays Women’s Championship safety against all odds with almost the last kick of the season when Mollie Green’s 97th-minute free-kick fired Coventry United to a 1-0 win at Watford, sending their opponents down in the process.
