Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood has withdrawn from the England squad due to injury.
FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official squad update from The Football Association this evening.
Greenwood played the full 90 minutes of England’s 2023 Women’s Finalissima victory over Brazil at Wembley last night. The defender sustained an injury late in the game but she was able to continue after receiving medical attention on the pitch.
Following a further assessment, it has been determined that Greenwood must withdraw from the Lionesses squad and return to her club for further medical support. England head coach Sarina Wiegman will not call up a replacement for the player.
After defeating Brazil 4-2 on penalties at Wembley to win the inaugural Women’s Finalissima, England now turn their attention towards an international friendly against Australia at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford on Tuesday evening. The CommBank Matildas are the co-hosts for this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup and they are fancied to do very well at the tournament.
Tuesday’s international friendly against Australia is a complete sell-out. More than 100,000 fans will have watched England in action over the current international window after the nation’s latest fixture. The lasting legacy of the Lionesses’ UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 success is very much rolling on.
