Former Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa star Anita Asante says that her induction into the Barclays Women’s Super League’s Hall of Fame provides her with an opportunity to reflect on her career.
WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official press release from The Football Association yesterday.
Asante was a key figure in helping to set the foundations for the women’s game in England before the WSL was introduced. She won an outstanding 13 trophies while at Arsenal, including two doubles and the historic quadruple in the 2007/2008 season. She later went on to have two separate spells at Chelsea before bringing her career to a close in the Midlands with Aston Villa.
The London-born defender also made 71 appearances on the international stage for England, featuring in squads for the UEFA Women’s EURO in 2005, 2009 and 2013. She celebrated her 50th appearance for the Lionesses at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2011.
Asante is now first team coach at newly-promoted Barclays Women’s Super League club Bristol City. She has been in the role since last summer.
Speaking to the media following her Barclays Women’s Super League Hall of Fame induction, Asante said “For me, it’s an amazing opportunity to reflect on my career and where I started as a little girl on an Estate in North West London to some of the heights of my football career and this journey.
“I think it’s only in these moments that you really stop, sit down and think about what you’ve done and realise it’s impacted someone out there, a young person who sees herself in me. Football has also given me a voice and a platform to use it and that’s one thing I’ve always wanted for other young players out there.”
Asante was entered into the Barclays Women’s Super League’s Hall of Fame alongside UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 winners Jill Scott MBE and Ellen White MBE.
